Notes for Inigo Wilkins, Andrew Osborne: Catalysing Dissent

21 century crowds: irreversible noise and computational immanence.
Unilateral unbinding (F. Laruelle) of the reciprocity of thought and being is of key importance to the assessment of the phenomena of the riots a d the heuristic decision-making of those engaged in rioting.

Laruelle: non-thetic transcendence, e.g. a transcendence not posited by thought, or without thesis.

As such, the immanent real is algorithmically incompressible noise, composed of multiple trajectories of non-linear dynamics/orders of complexity which cannot be predicted in advance.

Abequation-without-correspondence (foreclosure of the real to thought, real's incomputable randomness or radical contingency with regard to any model).

Model: is different from what it models, instead it organises a particular filed of action ('oraxiomatic', using L.'s terms axiom+oracle, a philosophical Decision).

Computational immanence (is non-problematic): all aspects of the real may be understood as both inputs and outputs of a purposeless and non-problematic computation.

Riots, explanatory schemas: are models that instrumentals a section of the real for specific purposes, and may be understood as performative.

They are better understood, despite their unforeseeably contingent nature, as a causally accountable manifestation of social grievance - not as an anomalous outburst of "unthinking" youth.

A riot is, therefore, a computation immanent to the materiality of the social fabric.

Society as Mind (generative and reducible) vs. Society of Mind (classically emergent and irreducible).

Joshua M. Epstein: agent-based, generative social science.

Sugarscape: an artificially intelligent agent-based social simulation that models the manner in which agents engage with the spatial environment.

E's conceptual basis: militant ignorance (commitment to "I don't know"). He sees the homology between hierarchical authority in science and in social relations.

E's conclusion: one-whot legitimacy reduction will have a greater effect that the sum of daily exposes of petty corruption.

Article's conclusive notes:

Elinor Ostrum, advantages/disadvantages of models.
Since unanswerable hegemonic forces fix the parameters of our situation externally through the state monopoly on violence, our youth are cruelly entreated to play a losing game.
